Our Research |
|
Our strong expertise in the areas of ceramics, metals, polymers and their composites allows us to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to research that helps to maximize creativity and productivity; our work forming part of the larger Materials and Structures research programme. The faculty of the Institute concentrate on the following cross-cutting research themes:
You can find out more about our current research projects here . Our annual research income is typically around £2M per annum, support being received from the UK Research Councils and Government, the European Union as well as industry both in the UK and world-wide. Industrial research income can amount to 25 – 33% of our total in any given year and very few research programmes do not have industrial input. We have about 20 Research Associates and Research Fellows and around 70 PhD students, some of the latter are based in industry, highlighting our close and comprehensive contacts with the industrial sector. Key within the PhD training programme is a requirement for professional development and an emphasis on enterprise. We have extensive facilities ranging from materials synthesis to processing and characterisation, the latter provided by the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre which houses state-of-the-art, world-class facilities as well as providing a service to industry. The Materials Research School, is one of five interdisciplinary Research Schools established by the University to facilitate research across traditional boundaries. The Materials Research School focuses on bringing together the significant strengths in materials research across Loughborough University to tackle projects which demand a multidisciplinary approach.
