Electricity Pylons

Electricity consumption in 2008/09 was 34.5 million kWh.

To reduce the environmental impact of 50% of the electricity supplied the electricity supplied to campus is “Green Electricity” which is supplied from renewable sources.

Historically the university has purchased “Green” electricity from pure green sources, such as small scale hydro and offshore wind. Due to an increase in demand for Green Electricity across the UK, when the supply contract was renewed (Jan 2010) only 50% of the supply to the university could be sourced from pure green sources.

Although purchasing green electricity does not provide any benefits towards reducing our carbon emissions, it does however show a clear statement of our commitment towards providing a sustainable campus.

Loughborough University has a national reputation for taking action on environmental issues. To continue this, we have launched a campaign entitled ‘It’s Better OFF’ to raise awareness about climate change and its causes as well as the practical things we can all do to improve our environment.
